Five tips to plan a successful OS migration

date12.07.2023

Due to the numerous dependencies of the application, each data migration project poses many challenges. While each one is unique, there is a risk of overlapping. In such a situation, it is necessary to identify the associations of applications and integration points, and to create a consistent workflow to reduce them. It is worth emphasizing that it is not about the applications themselves. Equally important is having a solid, realistic data migration plan. Understanding how long it takes is just as important as migrating the apps themselves.

Planning the entire process is the key to success.

Below are 5 tips to outline your data migration to make it as smooth as possible.

1. Documenting your environment will have many long-term benefits

Project managers and development teams should know what and where the application touchpoint is so that they know what types of problems and failures they may encounter. Note that if you are migrating to the cloud, you may not be able to work on hardware points.

2. Be clear about who is working on what

The involvement of the technical department in all problems is invaluable. Managers should also take care of subject matter experts. This is important because if something goes wrong during the test, the person can note down what they observed, and since they see that these situations happen often, it can provide perfect insight into what people are looking for. Clear and simple communication between employees is the key to success in data migration.

3.Schedule disaster recovery based on recovery time

In addition to a detailed plan for the migration process, there should also be a contingency plan in case something goes wrong. Sometimes testing an application in a new environment may not go as planned.

4. Make sure executive management is involved

Executive sponsorship of any migration project is of key importance. Appointed managers manage the team, prepare reports and make sure everything is done on time, but managers play an equally important role. Senior management staff is there to help in case of any problems - they see the value of the movement, understand it and are kept informed about the progress.

5.Soft Go-Lives should be the penultimate step before the official launch

No one in app development wants to launch a non-competitive product or app, so testing is always important. Soft Go-Lives is similar to a test but simulates a migrated application in a different environment. If it is activated on the weekend, it will not disturb employees while they work. Ultimately, it gives you the confidence to start using the main application.
